Marks & Harrison was founded in 1911 by David A. Harrison, Jr. and has continued its practice uninterrupted since that time. For more than three generations our attorneys have represented the families of Virginia. One of the largest personal injury law firms in the state, Marks & Harrison employs 31 attorneys and over 100 support personnel who focus their work on representing injured Virginians in injury, wrongful death and workers’ compensation matters. Among Marks & Harrison’s support staff are former claims adjusters and ten investigators, one of whom is bilingual, and several others who are former law enforcement officers.

Marks & Harrison was selected Best Law Firm by Style Weekly magazine readers from 2016-2018 and was voted Best of the Valley in 2022 by readers of the Daily News Record in Harrisonburg and Staunton. Two members of Marks & Harrison served in the Virginia House of Delegates, chairing the House Courts of Justice and Corporation, Insurance, and Banking Committees. Marks & Harrison attorneys have worked as Commonwealth’s Attorneys, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, Assistant Attorney General, and Associate Solicitor General for the Commonwealth of Virginia. One serves on the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council. One was Mayor of the City of Hopewell.

Firm members have been President of their local Rotary Club and Chambers of Commerce and have received the Jaycees’ Distinguished Community Service Award and Outstanding Young Citizen Award. Two served their communities as members of Kiwanis. For more than twenty years, Marks & Harrison sponsored a safety program with nurses from VCU Medical Center teaching teenagers the dangers of drinking and driving. One Marks & Harrison attorney was named a Pro Bono Hero by the Virginia State Bar and received the Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year award for 2019 from CancerLINC. The Firm supports the work of Central Virginia Legal Aid Society, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Virginia Poverty Law Center, CancerLINC, James River Association, and Legal Aid Justice Center.
Experience That Makes a Difference
Attorneys at Marks & Harrison have worked as lawyers for the County of Chesterfield, the Richmond School Board, the Hopewell School Board, and the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Marks & Harrison attorneys have worked for State Farm Insurance Company, GEICO, Home Insurance Company, The Hartford, Virginia Farm Bureau, Progressive Insurance Company, and Colonial Insurance Company, experience that informs their current work representing injured Virginians. A Marks & Harrison attorney has been General Counsel to the Hopewell Manufacturers Association since its inception in 1921.
Among the ranks of Marks & Harrison attorneys have been a former Supreme Court of Virginia law clerk and a federal court law clerk. One has written briefs for cases argued before the Supreme Court of the United States. Three have authored petitions to the Supreme Court of Virginia, and two have presented oral arguments to SCV panels. Two members of the firm served on the faculty of the Virginia College of Trial Advocacy and another was Adjunct Professor of insurance law at the University of Richmond Law School. Marks & Harrison endows a scholarship at the T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond for law students interested in a career in personal injury law.
Marks & Harrison attorneys have been active in the work of the Virginia State Bar, including chairing the Committee on Access to Legal Services and serving on District Committees, the Young Lawyer Conference, and the Committee on Lawyer Advertising and Solicitation. One Marks & Harrison attorney was a faculty member of the Virginia State Bar’s Professionalism Course and another was appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia to the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education board. Marks & Harrison attorneys regularly teach CLE seminars on various topics.
Attorneys at Marks & Harrison also have held positions of leadership with the Virginia Bar Association, including serving on its committee on Nominations to the Supreme Court of Appeals and on the Boyd-Graves Conference. One was a member of the 1944 Virginia Constitutional Convention.

Lawyers at Marks & Harrison have been President of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Metro Richmond Women’s Bar Association, the Petersburg Bar Association, the Hopewell Bar Association, the Sixth Circuit Bar Association, Central Virginia Legal Aid Society, Virginia Poverty Law Center, and Southside Virginia Legal Services. Members of the Firm have served on the Judicial Council of Virginia and the Conference of Insurance Legislators, have been certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and have been members of the Virginia College of Criminal Defense Attorneys.
One Marks & Harrison attorney served as President of the Virginia Capital Resource Center and another serves on the board of the Brain Injury Association of Virginia. Marks & Harrison lawyers have served on the boards of Legal Aid Justice Center, Metro Richmond Women’s Bar Association, and Southern Trial Lawyers Association.
